Altec has the capability to manufacture a wide range of aerospace components. These parts often have complex geometries and are manufactured from High-Grade Steels, Aluminium and exotic alloys such as Titanium and Inconel. Aerospace component parts supplied by Altec are used in a variety of Commercial and Defence applications.

Space Science

ESO - Very Large Telescope (ESO-VLT) 

Altec Engineering worked with Durham Centre for Advanced Intsrumention to supply precision components used in the VLT K-Band Multi Object Spectrometer (KMOS) Instrument. The instrument was fitted to one of the four telescopes which make ESO’s Very Large Telescope at Paranal in Chile, providing astronomers with a far quicker solution to uncover details about galaxies and their properties.

Altec Engineering manufactured many of the Complex CNC Precision Machined components that made up the final design of 24 robotic arms that position fold mirrors at user-specified position.

Altec's scope of supply included:-

  • 3,4 & 5 Axis Machining of complex shapes.
  • EDM Wire Erosion of complex shapes.

Each of the 24 cryogenic robotic arms, which have gold plated mirrors on their tips, can be moved into position to pinpoint with extreme accuracy the light coming from distant galaxies.

ESA - Earth Care Satellie

Altec Engineering is closely involved with several Space Science projects including work related to the European Space Agency – Earth Care Satellite.

Due for Launch in 2015 Altecs’ scope of supply on this project covers many of the complex CNC machined components used in two of the four main instruments on board which are used with the aim of providing a better understanding of Clouds and Aerosols and their impact on the Earths climatology.

Altec's scope of supply included:-

  • 3,4 & 5 Axis Machining of complex shapes.
  • EDM Wire Erosion of Complex Shapes.
  • Alocrom 1200 platting.
  • Supply of machined sub-assemblies.

NASA James Webb Telescope

The James Webb Space Telescope (sometimes called JWST) is an orbiting infrared observatory that will complement and extend the discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope, with longer wavelength coverage and greatly improved sensitivity. 

Altec Engineering has supplied many of the complex CNC Machined components used in the NIRSpec IFU Subsystem which mounts the Diamond machined Optics for the analysis of light from faint galaxies seen 10 Billion years ago.

  • EDM Wire Erosion of Complex Shapes.
