Oil & Gas Drive Growth For Altec

Date Added 28/05/2013

Since its inception in 1978, Altec Engineering has served a diverse customer base in a number of market sectors. Quickly gaining a reputation for engineering excellence, the company became one of the North Easts major suppliers to the Defence industry, providing through-life support capability for armoured fighting vehicles, where the ability to deliver high integrity machined components and meticulous documentation are essential pre-requisites.

The Defence market however, by its very nature, is unpredictable at its best and can change dramatically, subject to the outcome of Government spending reviews. Keen to build upon the high quality and engineering standards which the company had attained, Altec looked towards the Oil and Gas industry as an additional outlet for their skills.

Altec Director Paul Lackenby explains:- “Entering this market was somewhat of a natural progression for us as the demands, standards and expectations within the Oil and Gas industry are very much in line with those of our Defence customers. The components which we produce are often safety critical and our established reputation for complex machining, together with our ability to interpret and accommodate the differing demands for customer specific documentation, meant that Altec was swiftly recognised as a reliable partner for a number of prime contractors.”

Altec's manufacturing experience of CNC Precision Components extends to Subsea Technology, Top Side Automation, Drilling Technology, Well Intervention and the newly developed Subsea Gas Compression Technology.  In recent times, with the shrinking of the polar ice caps, exploration for new reserves in the Artic has added yet another dimension to this industry, with the harsh environmental conditions pushing the boundaries of material and cutting tool technology.

Today, this sector represents some 65% of the CNC machining work carried out by the company and with Altec now also forging new links outside of the United Kingdom, this will be a driver for further growth and investment to meet the demands of the company’s new export customers. Altec’s in house capabilities extend beyond CNC machining with the company’s Projects Division, supported by a team of mechanical and electrical designers plus software engineers, able to bid on turnkey projects for the Oil and Gas industry.

Other markets where Altec have a significant presence include Automotive, Medical Science, Nuclear & Renewable Energy and Aerospace & Space Science.
