The Manufacturer Top 100 provides a platform for the recognition of exceptional individuals in UK manufacturing. Now in its second year, this event honours those seen as manufacturing role models from a wide cross-section of the manufacturing community, with the broader aim of inspiring the younger generation to pursue careers in manufacturing.

Altec’s David Steel was recognised in this years Top 100, being selected from over 200 nominations by an esteemed judging panel, consisting of sixteen representatives from academia, industry and government.

Those selected must fulfill at least one of the 5 judging criteria, and David Steel has been recognised within the category of “An Inspiring Leader” - someone who has created wealth for and stable employment at a UK based manufacturing firm, while remaining committed to investing in developing the value of their manufacturing business through people, processes and technology.

Joining Altec Engineering as a design draughtsman in 1989, David progressed to technical director and then in 2004 to managing director. David was involved in the introduction of the Special Purpose Machine Building and CNC capabilities, growing the company from £1.5m to £4.5m, with a strategy of growth to £26m within the next three to four years. Due to his personal route into engineering and the opportunities within it, David Steel is passionate about the importance of apprenticeships, for this reason more than 10% of the workforce at Altec are apprentices.
